Geography
In Geography at Front Lawn Primary we encourage children to think like Geographers. Our Geographers will be curious about the world and the physical and human features within it.
We ensure that pupils understand that they are global citizens. By the time pupils leave Front lawn Primary, they will have a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We have adopted an enquiry approach to geography learning to ensure the children can interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs.
Content and Sequencing
- Geography, along with most Foundation subjects are linked with the overarching whole school topic and the individual topic of each class.
- In term 2, the topic ‘Our Wonderful World’ has a strong Geographical focus for every class.
- Topics are ‘designed’ with relevance in mind. For example Year R study the local area so that they can understand the United Kingdom topic in Year 2 better
- Geography is taught in a Research, Skills, Plan, Make, Evaluate sequence.

Retrieval Practise
Geography Dashboard – Parts of the Geography curriculum need to be taught regularly to ensure that this is embedded within their long-term working memory. We have created dashboards that cover countries in the world, capital cities, seas and oceans, weather and climates, famous human and physical features and key geographical vocabulary.
This learning is carefully planned so that it supports children’s progress in this subject. The children are exposed to these dashboards at least twice a week. This ensures that the children are retrieving this key knowledge regularly.
Learning Environments
We ensure our learning environments are immersive and topic driven. Our classrooms have looked like a forest, a beach and a base camp at the top of a mountain.
More able Historians
The more able Geographers at Front Lawn are offered an ‘Investigators trip’ each term. They have completed a local fieldwork study and visit London to map famous landmarks.
Assessment
Geography is assessed each Term. Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard. Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close eye on them the following term.
As geographers we really enjoy exploring our local area and the world around us.
